We Were Here First! Since 1989.

Discover for yourself the unique and wondrous properties of Manuka Honey, which we were proud to introduce to American consumers for the first time almost three decades ago. Manuka Honey has been shown to have natural, powerful antibacterial properties that aid with digestion, boost the immune system and help heal wounds. All of our Manuka Honey is genuine and has been independently tested for potency and purity. These test certificates are available upon request for consumers with the batch number from, info@pri-nz.com. We work directly with the bee keepers in New Zealand who pack the honey for us. Indeed, all our jars of honey have the name of the company in New Zealand who packed it so you can be assured it was harvested from a reputable source.

The Magic of Manuka

In her BBC News article, “Harnessing Honey’s Healing Power," Angie Knox quotes biochemist Professor Peter Molan about Manuka Honey: "It works on bacteria, fungi, protozoa. We haven't found anything it doesn't work on among infectious organisms." True to Professor Molan’s words, Manuka Honey is widely believed to not only treat minor wounds and burns, but to:

  • Help lower cholesterol
  • Help reduce systemic inflammation
  • Help treat diabetes
  • Help reduce ear, eye and sinus infection symptoms
  • Help reduce gastrointestinal problems

Hydrogen peroxide is a component of most raw honeys and is responsible for the antibiotic benefits most honeys provide. Most types of honey also have components with antibacterial qualities, but only Manuka Honey contains methylglyoxal (MG), one of the key UMF (Unique Manuka Factors) qualities. Indeed, the higher the concentration of MG, the more powerful the antibiotic effect, which is one reason honey producers have developed a scale for rating the UMF potency of Manuka Honey. Therapeutic abilities start with 5+ either UMF or Bio Active. The advantage of higher grades is that less honey can be used for the same results for everyday conditions. For extreme conditions, a 10+ UMF or higher is recommended.

Not All Manuka Honey Is Created Equal

According to PRI founder David Noll, however, “In recent times, we’ve seen a plethora of Manuka Honey suppliers claiming that you need to have a 16+ or higher to get the job done for certain conditions although testing has shown that there’s actually no difference in treating these conditions when using grades between the 10+ and 20+. In addition, many so-called Manuka Honey products are in fact packaged outside of New Zealand to bypass NZ regulations, which is why we’ve always cited the name and address of the New Zealand bee keepers where our honey is packed with a batch number. The bottom line is that not all Manuka Honey products are created equally, and we feel a responsibility to help ensure that American consumers are experiencing the benefits of authentic New Zealand honey just the way nature intended.”

Sweetening the pot even further, PRI also offers a veritable menu-full of naturally delectable gourmet native honeys ideal for everyone from seasoned chefs to harried home cooks.

Like all of the company’s diverse products, PRI’s Manuka and gourmet culinary honeys (including Chocolates, Caramels, Nuggets and Lozenges!) are available online at www.shoppri.com, as well as in select health food and health product retail stores nationwide. Every jar of honey has a New Zealand Certificate Of Analysis (COA) for purity and strength.

There are many ways of grading Manuka Honey, devised by manufacturers to show that their honey is the purest and most potent.

What used to be known aS Bio Active

The honey used to be tested in a petri dish against phenol. The numbers in the scale related to the equivalent % strength of phenol, when killing bacteria. This method of testing is no longer performed.

MG or MGO

MG, MGO or Methylglyoxal is a chemical compound found in Manuka honey which is thought to be responsible for the additional anti-bacterial properties. By itself an MG test isn’t robust enough as it can be fooled by flash heating the honey or by adding synthetic MG.

Pollen Count

Pollen count has traditionally been used to determine if a honey is to be considered monofloral. Very often this is quoted as a percentage. This method falls short when it comes to grading Manuka as the price of Manuka continues to rise.. For example, if you were to blend Manuka honey with a low pollen honey such as Honeydew (nectar comes from aphids) then you can still get a high percentage of Manuka Pollen even though the percentage of Manuka Honey is relatively low.

UMF

This represents the unique signature compounds characteristic of this honey which ensure purity and quality. These include: the key markers of Leptosperin, DHA and Methylglyoxal.

We have our own scale honey which uses the old numbers (e.g. 5+, 10+) from “Bio Active” tests but we now use MG and Leptospirin levels to calculate these numbers instead. We also carry a range of UMF rated Manuka Honey.

Bee Pollen

  • Bee Pollen is a natural form of sustained energy release and is one of Nature’s most complete foods.
  • An excellent source of essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes. It is collected by honeybees from the pristine forests and pastures of New Zealand.
  • New Zealand bee pollen has the highest rating for vitamins and minerals from the unique flora.

Bee Venom

  • Bee-sting therapy has been used for centuries in several cultures.  Naturally occurring chemical compounds in the venom (e.g. Melittin, Apamine) assist by stimulating the production of cortisone in the human body
  • Venom’s anti-oxidant qualities also make it effective as a booster for the immune system
  • Unique extraction process ensures the bees aren’t killed

Propolis

  • The only Propolis to be CPL™ certified. This ensures a guaranteed level of bioflavonoids
  • Bioflavonoids are the active component of Propolis thought to be responsible for its antibacterial properties
  • Bee Propolis is a natural defense that bees use to coat their hives to prevent diseases & harmful bacteria
  • Can be used internally or applied topically
  • Helps support immune system, has powerful antibiotic properties

Most people have now heard something about Manuka Honey but Manuka Oil is still relatively unknown.

  • Manuka Oil is Nature’s antiseptic & antifungal agent.
  • Botanically related to Tea Tree Oil but a pleasant floral aroma and is safe for sensitive skin.
  • Good for massaging into tired or aching muscles and joints
  • Aromatherapy is beneficial for people with over sensitive nervous systems, who suffer from stress and anxiety. Great sleep aid with Essential Oil Diffuser / Humidifier
  • Effective on skin conditions such as Acne, Eczema, Ring Worm, Skin Rash, Athlete’s Foot, Nail Infections, Cuts, Insect Bites & Stings
